Position Description: Denison University Women’s and Gender Studies Program invites applications for the 2023-24 Laura C. Harris Scholar-in-Residence. The residency will be awarded this year to an outstanding scholar, artist, and/or activist in the field of Women’s and Gender Studies engaged in advanced research and/or praxis. Area of specialization is open. Welcomed areas on inquiry and praxis include, but are not limited to, intersectional and/or transnational feminist approaches in the following: critical data and digital studies; environmental and climate justice; Asian diasporic studies; critical youth studies and youth activism; reproductive rights and the law; and the creative and performing arts. Review of applications to begin by January 31, 2023, and the search will remain open until the position is filled.
The Laura C. Harris (LCH) Scholar-in-Residence is held for either Fall or Spring semester or for a full academic year (approximately mid-August through mid-May). The scholar’s proposed research, artistic, or activist project should advance women’s and gender studies scholarship, promote the importance of women’s and gender issues among the general public, and/or explore aspects of feminist pedagogy.
The project must be in the field of Women’s and Gender Studies. Interdisciplinary projects that include rich opportunities for student involvement are particularly welcomed. The LCH Scholar-in-Residence is required to be in residence at Denison University while working on their research project and to teach one course each semester in their area of expertise. The LCH Scholar-in-Residence will engage in at least one additional public intellectual contribution to Denison University and the Women’s and Gender Studies Program, such as a talk, performance, or workshop.
Denison University is a residential liberal arts college where students have frequent contact with faculty members. Scholars-in-Residence are therefore expected to participate in the life of the Women’s and Gender Studies Program and the college on a regular basis and to interact closely with undergraduates.
Salary and Benefits: The LCH Scholar-in-Residence receives a stipend to support a one- or two-semester residency at Denison University, a moving allowance, library privileges, shared administrative support, and assistance in finding housing. The position offers a competitive stipend and benefits package. Stipend is commensurate with residency duration, rank, and experience.
Location: Denison University is a highly selective liberal arts college that emphasizes excellence in both teaching and scholarship. It is located in the historic village of Granville, about thirty miles east of Columbus, Ohio, the state capital, which hosts a wide range of cultural and artistic opportunities. Granville also offers an excellent public school system and easy access to outdoor activities.
The Women’s and Gender Studies Program offers both a major and a minor and forms a lively intellectual community of faculty and students. The Program emphasizes critical awareness of and intellectual sensitivity to women’s and gender issues; the intersectionality of gender and other aspects of identity, including race, class, age, religion and sexuality; the interdisciplinarity of feminist methods and theories; and the transformative power of connecting the academic study of women’s and gender issues with activism, community advocacy, internships, and professionalization opportunities. The Women’s and Gender Studies Program administers the Laura C. Harris Fund and Series, which sponsors major speakers, activists, and performers each year. Qualifications: Applicants may be affiliated with an academic institution or they may be independent scholars, artists, or activists. Applicants from groups traditionally underrepresented in the academy are encouraged to apply. Junior or Senior applicants as defined below will be considered.
Junior applicants with an affiliation are not tenured in their home institution. Candidates with a Ph.D. in hand and candidates who are ABD will be considered, as long as the Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in their field is completed prior to the start date (August 2023). Independent scholars, artists, or activists must demonstrate a record of achievement equivalent to that of an emerging professional.
Senior applicants with an affiliation must be tenured at their home institution. Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in their field at the time of application to be considered for this position. Independent scholars, artists, or activists must demonstrate an outstanding record of professional achievement.
